Ways To Develop A Photographic Memory

By Karen Kelly

So you want a photographic memory? Not so long ago it was thought that a strong memory was simply a talent you are born with. Nowadays people have discovered that all it takes is mindfulness and practise to develop a photographic memory. Whether this is something you use to simply enhance your life, or if you want to take it a step further, it is all possible.

If our lives are the sum of our memories, then it stands to reason that having an extraordinary memory will allow you to appreciate the life you have led even more. The ability goes further than this though. It makes every part of your day easier, especially for those with a career that depends on remembering. There are even international competitions that challenge individuals to push the known boundaries of memory.

There are several ways to go about it. The military have a very specific method, although it is not one that everyone can get on board with. There are a few other methods that are much more popular. Learning this new ability is very worthwhile, however it is not easy and can take several months, at least. Typically it is a lifelong habit. It is best to think of it like exercise. To keep your body healthy you need to it daily, for the rest of your life. To keep your memories intact you should exercise your mind daily too.

The first step, as with most things in life, is to look after yourself. A healthy diet and plenty of exercise will help to ensure that you get the most out of your brain training. Amongst another reasons, the exercise will increase oxygen to the brain, strengthening your ability to remember.

Exercising the mind is equally as important. Brain training has become more popular in recent years, as people realised that the mind needs to be challenged in order to function at its best. Improving memory function is a form of brain training alone, but there are many other forms that develop varying brain functions. Using these games and techniques regularly will quickly show results.

In the past, the favoured method for improving memory was repetition. This is something that most people experienced in school, repeating the same lines of text over and over again. It is effective in most cases, but it is also quite tedious. Some of the more modern methods are much more enjoyable. Using visual triggers is probably the favoured method, as the more bizarre the image you use, the more effective it is. The involvement of the imagination is key.

While some people are born with a photographic memory, it is thought that if you practise every day you can develop the talent yourself. However this does take regular and dedicated practise for several months at least before any results can be seen. Such a talent can completely change your life, so a few months practise is certainly worth the time and effort.

Brain training and working on your memories will improve your self esteem and confidence, allowing you to embrace your life and savour every moment without missing out on anything. Before long you will be unable to stop as the success and improvement in your life becomes addictive.
