By Amie Murrieta

Many young and even older women decide they want a career that they can begin to make money with within a relatively short period of time. One of the top choices for these women is cosmetology school Sacramento. Classes last for approximately 13 months, and they can choose between daytime classes or evening classes plus Saturdays.

Some people learn better with hands on learning than with book learning. That is why they choose cosmetology for a career. The majority of their time is spent putting into practice everything they are being taught in class. They gain plenty of experience, mature as a cosmologist, perfect their skills and finish their training with the confidence that they can do the job. Many of their clients will follow them on to their first job.

Cosmetologists learn to care for a person's hair during their time in class. They learn how to take care of scalp problems, fix and cut hair, dye hair and do massages. Besides dealing with the hair, students also learn how to care for the nails and skin, perform hair removal, dress wigs and apply makeup.

The big question after studies are completed is where to work. Most will work in salons, and about half will own their own shop. Others will find jobs in resorts, hotels, hospitals, spas, nursing homes or on cruises. The job outlook for cosmetology is exceptionally good over the next ten to fifteen years.

Once students have their cosmetology license, the majority will work full-time. For those who prefer part-time work, there are also many opportunities. Many work long hours and weekends to meet their client's needs. Weekends and around the holiday season are always the busiest times for hairdressers.

The median pay for cosmetologists is not as high as some jobs, but it permits them to start out higher than minimum wage. The lowest earners only make minimum wage. Those who do quality work can expect to earn considerably more from customer tips.
