Building Schools In Africa Slums Is Important

By Diane Schmidt

It is sad that in the 21st century, poverty is still a major problem in the world. If more than 45 million Americans are living in poverty, the poverty problem is definitely a major one in the African continent. That is because most of Africa is the third world while the USA is in the first world. There are many unique third world problems. The schooling problem in this part of the world can be addressed by building schools in Africa slums. In informal settlements, they are very few schools. Thus, more need to be built.

The importance of a school must never be underestimated at any moment in time. It may be the only thing that is needed to totally end poverty in a particular slum. A school can even be more important than a hospital because ignorance and lack of education are the worst diseases in the modern day world. Education is the only cure for ignorance.

In the West, schooling facilities are very common. They are everywhere. There is also the option of homeschooling. However, in informal settlements in Africa and Asia, there is a shortage of schools and hospitals. That is because these areas have been neglected by those in authority. Thus, there is need for non-governmental organizations to fill the gap and build educational facilities.

Money is being allocated to building educational facilities but politicians are eating or mismanaging the monies. Thus, the African child is the one who suffers at the end of the day. As it is said, children are the future leaders. They will not become leaders or anything in life, if they lack the necessary education. Being learned is very important.

However, people should not leave everything to the government. Society should do something to help the most vulnerable. One does not need to come from a slum so that to contribute to building a school there. A person can choose to help even if he comes from another country. It is always good to help those people who are in need.

Education is one of the ways that can make people to get out of slums. Therefore, if children are not able to learn, they will not be able to conquer the problems that they are currently facing. They will continue wallowing in poverty and that will be a big problem in the world. With the spread of poverty, crimes and other undesirable matters usually increase.

The African continent is beset with educational challenges. First, in some areas, there is no place for learning. Secondly, even if there is a school, some people cannot afford to pay school fees. Thirdly, children can be too hungry to go to school. Thus, building a school is not enough. There is also the need for free primary and secondary education.

Learning is not a privilege. It is a right of every child. Children can only learn when there are educational institutions. In some parts of the world, a school is a very rare sighting. There are cases where children are forced to learn from under a tree. In some places, it is even not possible to learn at all. Thus, people should step in and build education facilities.
