Industrial Applications Of Cryogenic Gases

By Douglas Thompson

Technology has come up with very many ways aimed at ensuring that processes are effective. Fluids have been used for storage and other production purposes for a very long time. Cryogenic gases have the property of remaining in their liquid states at temperatures which are extremely low. This is a property that is not common to a majority of other such fluids. Due to this feature, they have received a comprehensive application in many industries all over the world. Below are a couple of ways that they can be used.

They are used for the transportation of massive frozen foods. When there is a need to transport vast amounts of food to far distances such as war zones and earthquake-hit areas, there is need to freeze them to avoid spoilage. These gases are an excellent choice for doing this as they keep the food fresh and ensures that there is no spoiling or contamination during this process.

Another application is storing of blood. Though a majority of the donated blood is used almost immediately, there are those types which are rare and have to be stored until their need comes up in the future. Systems such as the use of refrigerators may not be a wise choice due to issues such as power losses, which has led to the use of such gases.

They are also used in the entertainment industry to make events colorful. Nightclubs and other related functions introduce the gases where they are released in the form of a fog. This creates a chilling effect on the individuals around. It is however medically proven to cause no side effect and hence a good choice to use for coloring the function.

Recycling plants also make use of these gases. During the recycling process, the items have to be broken down into their original states so that they can be molded all over again. Application of processes such as heating and melting are expensive and time-consuming. Application of these products, however, is different in that they only freeze the materials and allows the breaking down to pieces which will be remolded.

Manufacturing plants also used them to sharpen and cool their machines. Oxygen is used to perform a couple of functions in the various industries and especially those which require to have their tools sharp for productivity. Cooling is another property that is needed for a majority of tools, and these fluids provide for the function. Their use is more effective and saves immensely as compared to the use of other products and activities.

Rockets have also applied the products as fuels. Moving into space requires that the machine carries a relatively small weight and they achieve this when the fuels from hydrogen, methane are used. This has been in use since the first time that they were launched into orbit. Over time, the area has improved, and new and improved forms of the same have been developed.

In conclusion, they are used to transport power in big cities. Transmitting power using overhead cables across huge cities is hectic and likely to cause many accidents. However, when underground cables are used, they suffer from heating and resistance and which lead to power wastage. However, when the fluids are brought in, they solve the problem of heating and reduction of resistance and facilitate transmission of power.
