Benefits Acquired In Peers Tutoring Training

By Linda Ruiz

There are a number of students who have troubles with their grades in certain subjects. Because of this, schools would ask other individuals, usually their classmates, to help these students with the subjects. Most commonly, the students being asked for help are individuals who have been excelling in the subject that others are having troubles with.

Schools are using peer tutoring programs where a student help another student in the subject matter involved and eventually resulting to an improved grade. To become a tutor, peers tutoring training must be undergone. The said training will serve as a guide on how to share their expertise to those students that the tutors will be helping.

The tutor is expected to have a wide knowledge of the academic subject that he will be handling. He should also be able to come to his tutoring sessions on time. He should be very patient in dealing with the tutee. He should be also be able to communicate with him clearly and effectively. Aside from these, he should be able to help the tutee in improving his grades which is the primary function and goal of the tutoring program.

Several techniques can be acquired from the orientation. These techniques can be used to manage the tutee. He will also have the opportunity to learn new things himself. Since this is the case, he will also be able to improve his own knowledge while sharing the knowledge that he already has to the other student.

Each individual possesses a certain type of personality. He needs to teach the tutees about the subject matter regardless of whether he likes their disposition or not. Professionalism will be exhibited in these instances which will help him in growing maturely. With these experiences, not only will he be able to handle the tutees but also handle himself well.

It is inevitable to have students that are rowdy. There are those who have, pretty much, not so good behaviors. For this matter, the training will help the tutor in doing things that could mitigate, if not eliminate, these unwanted behaviors. He will be able to demand respect without having the need to use force.

There are also those who are thinking that their tutors should be the ones making their homework instead of themselves. For the tutees to gain understanding that this is not the case, the training will provide steps and actions on how to deal with these incidents. They should be able to make them understand that they are there to reinforce learning and not do their assignments. If the tutor gives in and does the assignment himself, the goal of peer tutoring is lost.

Cultural background and family upbringing are unique in each individual. Since this is the case, the mentor should be able to respect their differences. He should be able to manage these students without having to categorize them. The training will assist him on how to attend to the said tutees.

These benefits are only several things that a mentor can get when undergoing a training for peer tutors. Ultimately, he should be the kind of tutor that will always be there for his tutee. It will give him a sense of accomplishment if he will be able to see an improvement on the part of the student not only academically but also with his personal development.
