Erosion Control Companies Play A Vital Role In Protecting The Environment

By Gregory Stone

Experts from almost every field has long warned that the planet is facing a catastrophic crisis. Mankind keep plundering rare resources and cause considerable damage to the environment in the process. The air, water and soil is polluted and the ability of the planet to sustain life is undermined by selfish human behaviour. There are those, however, that endeavour to repair or event prevent the damage. Erosion control companies, for example, do much to protect the soil.

When the top layer of soil is swept away, a barren site remains. No vegetation grows there and subsequently no insects, wildlife or birds can use the terrain as a habitat. Even worse, eroded sites are prone to mud slides and landslides. This can endanger human life and cause even more devastation of the soil in surrounding areas. Most of the damage is caused by human activities.

All forms of life on earth depend upon the availability of enough fertile soil. Unfortunately human activities such as construction and mining as well as unsustainable farming methods keep eroding more and more soil. If something is not done, there will come a point where there is simply not enough soil to grow sufficient crops and natural foods to feed humanity and all the other creatures that need to feed.

The truth is that there is much that can be done to prevent damage to the soil and even to repair damage previously done. One of the easiest ways in which to achieve this aim is to do everything possible to prevent the removal of established vegetation or to establish new vegetation where it is not possible to prevent its removal. Vegetation plays a vital role in binding the soil, thus protecting it from floods, wind damage and mudslides.

Enterprises specializing in the control of eroded soil have an arsenal of technological solutions available. Silt barriers are used to prevent landslides and mudslides to get out of control. There are wind barriers that will protect sites against the devastating effects of strong winds. Even sand bags are used to help protect newly established vegetation and to prevent the soil from being carried away by water.

In many countries developers in all spheres of life is required to perform an environmental impact assessment before they start their activities. In many cases the issue of a license to conduct mining activities, for example, is subject to a condition that the developer will rehabilitate the land. However, critics say that the laws in this regard are not strict enough.

Many countries have introduced laws that aim to protect the environment against unscrupulous development. In most cases, developers have to submit an environmental impact assessment before they are allowed to continue with their plans. Critics reckon that these laws have no teeth and that very few developers are ever prosecuted for causing harm to the environment. They are calling for much stricter regulations.

The future of humankind is bound to the future of the planet. Once the planet can no longer sustain human life due to a lack of fertile soil, healthy air and pure water, human life will cease. The importance of maintaining the sustainability of the planet simply cannot be overemphasised.
