The Concept Of DBT In NYC

By Roger Stewart

A new therapy is now available for those suffering from Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD, ) addiction, eating disorders and other forms mental illness. This new therapy known as DBT in NYC teaches clients how to overcome suicidal tendencies and trends toward self-harm. In doing so, therapists teach individuals that life is worth living. As a result, the therapy has now become quite popular as clients have started to show progress.

In most cases, therapists in New York will focus on symptomatic issues rather than the root cause of the problem. While this can be effective, this new therapy takes a different approach. For, this application, unlike other therapies helps individuals create a life worth living as part of the process.

Although it has taken a great deal of research and development, the process is now considered one of the best applications for those with Borderline Personality Disorder. While the disorder is closely related to Bi-Polar disorder, those with the latter can often become far more violent than those suffering from Borderline Personality Disorder. For, when it comes to BPD, most individuals can be pushed to rage but rarely violence.

The therapy can also be used to treat others whom do not suffer from mental illness. As such, while mental illness has always been the prime focus of the application, those with eating disorders, addiction or substance abuse may also find the process beneficial. As the process focuses on teaching individuals and families that life is worth living, many lives have been saved in the process.

Behavior modification is also an aspect of this new therapy. For, unless individuals using this application can learn to meditate, react appropriately when provoked, build better relationships and live in the moment, it can often be difficult to manage life. As a result, the combination of these different therapeutic applications often help individuals learn how to do so.

Those providing this treatment focus on teaching meditation, regulation of emotions, tolerance in times of distress, and interpersonal effectiveness. After which, most individuals can find it easier to appreciate and live life to the fullest. In doing so, individuals learn how to focus attention on reality in the moment rather than past of future concerns. In most cases, these group sessions are offered at a nominal fee, though while rare, there may be some scholarship money available from time to time.

Individuals looking to provide this service must participate in group training sessions which take approximately 4 months to complete. As there are four different adult training sessions, 4 youth training and sessions and a family session, those attending the training can often chose to complete all or part of the training at once. In cases where an individual desires to complete all four processes in all four areas, it can often take a few extra weeks to a month to complete these requirements.

To obtain a certificate and be able to serve clients, an individual must complete these 4 levels of training. The training includes modules in mindfulness, emotions and response, distress tolerance and how better to manage a crisis. For example, the latter applies to learning how to better deal with interpersonal relationships when two or more individuals disagree. Once an individual has completed these four modules then one can begin serving clients.
