The Usefulness Of Psychology Supervisor Training Australia

By Kathleen Hill

In every career, people need to be supervised in order to learn, grow and corrected where they are wrong. Training a psychologist might seem like a walk in the park at which it is not. Supervising this area actually requires a special skill set in order to work. The methods used to determine the kind of practitioners the trainees turn into. The article elaborates further on psychology supervisor training Australia.

At the beginning of these training sessions, the supervisors should ensure that they are friendly and warm up to the trainees. This will create a special bond between them which will in turn make working together easier. Apart from being friendly, the supervisor should avail themselves for consultation with the trainee in case a problem occurs.

Trainees need to be feel included. A supervisor should make sure that thy are always available in case their trainees need them. Disregarding the trainees may have a huge negative impact on them. They may feel disrespected in one way or the other just simply because of being guided all the time. They will assume they were not involved because they do not have as much experience as their supervisors and other staff members.

Trainers tech theoretical knowledge and expect it to be applied practically by their trainees. You should not only focus on feeding knowledge to the trainees; you should try to see life from their side too. At the end of each session, you may try and find out what they thought of the lesson, if they agree with it and if they are looking forward to the next.

As a trainee develops, they go through three major levels. The first, the trainees are anxious and need guidance on how to deal with clients. The second, the trainee has gained confidence and are completely focused on their client. The third is when the learner empathizes with the client and they are to apply what they have learnt theoretically.

Feedback is mandatory for every session. Without it, we all would be steering blindly into the future. In psychology, feedback is not always based on how you relate to other people and how you work. Sometimes it is about professionalism and the trainees personality. This is hard to talk about with the learner and should be done delicately.

Seeing as giving feedback is not always easy especially if the feedback is not so positive, a supervisor should come up with a way to be delicate with the results issuing to his/ her trainees. It may be difficult to explain through emails, phone calls, and even text messages. A trainer should consider having audio or video files to help them in pointing out the faults clearly.

No two people can always agree on anything. This means no matter how close a trainee and the supervisor are, there will always be a difference of opinion. This means that a supervisor is one to put things bluntly, they should improve to avoid complicating their relationship with their client.
