The Advocacy Of Bridging The Gap

By Stephen Brown

The world has progressed well beyond our imaginations. However, its to be noted how some people, and more specifically, their attitudes, can resist remaining so backward and primitive. For instance, you have the prevailing views and attitudes towards AIDS. One organization that aims to overturn this harmful precondition is bridging the gap Indianapolis.

What is BTG and where does it spring from. This organization is an alliance, a collation or network of other organizations, local, regional, and international in many countries that work to end the stigmatization of AIDS throughout the world. They key populations that they pinpointed to specifically help are members of the LGBT community, the drug users, and also those who are working in the sex trade.

Among the most prominent organizations in this regard is one that leans towards HIV protection. The human immunodeficiency virus is a blight amongst many societies. However, what stokes the fire of discrimination is the blatant ignorance in its regard. People generally do not know what AIDS entails, let alone how it is different or related to HIV.

One of the greatest aspects of misunderstanding is the means of transmission of the virus. Many things can be misconstrued and stereotyped about it. Some derogatorily refer to it as gay cancer, and we need not point out the offensive overtones in this case. The consequence in being prejudiced against in this regard is that people are not getting the attention and treatment that they need.

Suffice it to say, members of these three key populations tend to cast off their human rights like its a robe or something. They tend to forget that they deserve something, some things better. You cant wait for the whole world to change and then let yourself go in the meantime. It is one thing to transform other peoples mindset, but if you dont take care of yourself, then what good does it do.

As said, the pinpointed populations may seem like a gross generalization. However, the statistics speak for themselves, since these demographics account for nearly half the new infections in the whole world. Some people seem to be dealing with this by focusing their attention and raising awareness on people that are not yet affected, and in the meantime, those affected remain marginalized.

It is a hard pill to swallow when people own that most of the time, they really have no control over what happens to them. There are those who dont belong to the above demographics but due to skewed circumstances have AIDS as well. There are some who might be practically subsumed in them but the way they contracted the virus wasnt in the common ways in which people tend to think.

Government authorities, organization heads, and influencers are often blamed for making decisions up from the ivory tower. The same thing cant be said for BGT, with the key demographics on the front seat. From implementation to governance, and generally in all stage of decision making, they get to have their say. They can also bring their grievances and challenges to the table in a more direct way, in such a way thats not like to get forgotten or get lost in translation.

The effort to change something that is so ingrained and inflexible should be approached in a foundational way. There is a hierarchy of needs and priorities at work here. When you start off big, those at the individual level will receive mere individual morsels and overly diluted boons. However, when you start gradually, and slowly and surely, you are sure to make a greater difference.
