The Do's & Don'ts Of Veterinary Education

By Robin Setser

Anyone that loves animals will tell you that medical care is of the utmost importance. For those that are passionate about veterinary care, they will most likely go to school so that they secure the best education. Obtaining said education will be a challenge, though, which is why it's important to mentally prepare yourself ahead of time. By following these do's and don'ts, you will be able to graduate with a degree that will take you far.

DO understand that attendance matters. It would be a given to say that attendance matters in veterinary school. While there are exceptions, many college courses don't penalize students for missing classes. However, this can have a negative impact in terms of the information that you may miss. As a result, it's in your best interest to attend each class that you're scheduled to take, thereby getting more out of your education.

DON'T forget to study outside of your classes. If you take the time to educate yourself outside of your classes, you may end up performing better. Let's say that you research PEMF therapy for animals, which may not be covered in all classes. This can provide you with a level of information you wouldn't have had otherwise. It may also boost your confidence level, which will make you all the more likely to partake in class discussion.

DO study in groups instead of alone if possible. One of the best ways to make classes easier is by studying in groups. You'd be amazed by how much easier it is to absorb information if you work with other students. This can also provide you with an opportunity to create friendships that extend beyond the campus. Instead of studying alone, try to get involved in groups. You may end up with higher marks if you do so.

DON'T become stressed over school. Veterinary school has its share of challenges, but these shouldn't deter you from learning. You can reduce your level of stress in a number of ways. For instance, you should take part in exercise if you don't have a regimen set in place. Running, yoga, and weightlifting are just a few exercises that keep you focused, all the while reducing stress. Keep these methods in mind if stress is a concern.
