Causes Of New York Traffic

By Tammie Caldwell

New York is among the most densely and highly populated cities in the world. There are therefore, many people who are travelling from one place to another; there are several means of travel that they may use. These include the railway network which is by trains or the airways by airplane. The most common means however, is by means of road network. Motor vehicles carts tricycles and movements of people are all causes of the New York traffic.

The design of most roads is that there are movements that occur from various directions. When these movement surpass a certain number it results to reduced speed or brakes altogether.this will cause more cars to also stop. If a car stops then the one behind must also stop. This continues until the number becomes substantially sustainable by the available network.

The City, s super highways are big with some exceeding five lanes. One may thus wonder why we have traffic in this city. A major reason may be that the influx or numbers of vehicles that are entering the highway are more than those that are coming out. So traffic is hampered in the highway by several factors and not only the size of the road or lanes available.

One factor that causes traffic is for example if accidents occur on the road. It true to say that incidents and accidents may results to traffic jams. As a result several lanes may be closed. However, it, s also true to say that jams are a major cause of these unexpected events. That why it is important to come up with ways that may curb this piling of vehicles on the roads.

You will also find out that there are many infrastructure developments that are always going on within town. It is good to avoid the routes where these projects are taking place. This works may be to expand the available roads or building of new ones . This is done to accommodate for the increasing number of vehicle usage.

Sometimes the weather is very harsh. Extreme snowfalls results to very slippery roads. Drivers are forced to drive slowly and carefully. They therefore have to brake frequently. This means that they spend more time on the road. In return the fuel consumption goes up and travel cost also. Other situations such as a cop giving a warning to an offender may also result to jams.

Due to the various losses of both resources and time, it is important to curb this menace. The government in collaboration with the private sectors seeks alternative ways that can help to reduce or improve it. The available highways are not enough for the ever increasing number of vehicles. There is need to build and expand the existing ones. This however is a very expensive undertaking.

Among the ways that are being used is providing special lanes for vehicles with a high occupancy. This is known as car pooling. People who share cars are given the privilege of using the fast flowing lanes. Other methods that are being used are ramp metering. This method allows cars to enter the highways or lanes at timed interval. It has been showed to lower accidents and improve traffics speeds.
