Risks Associated With Cryogenic Gases

By Stephen Hamilton

Some gases like oxygen, carbon dioxide, helium, and argon are among those which can be stored in liquid form. They are known as Cryogenic Gases and have both negative and positive significances. But there is a great need for one to take much care when dealing with them especially when they are in their liquefied state. People prefer to store them in this state to reduce the volumes. The following are risks one can encounter when handling them without taking precautions.

Starting with inert gases including helium, argon, and nitrogen, they are known to be dangerous when exposed to the environment in large quantities. They lead to a reduction of oxygen after which causes suffocation to the individuals who inhale them. In case one inhales huge amounts, there are risks of death since they will shut down the respiratory systems.

Carbon dioxide is another gas that can cause asphyxiation to an individual who inhales it. But its effects are somehow mild toxic as compared to the above gases. It is known to have great effects on the atmosphere since it leads to increased global warming. So, it is crucial for one to take care when dealing with it and avoid much of it exposure.

Oxygen is of great significance to respiration. All organisms use it for survival and need to keep clean and sufficient for use. But on the other hand, when in excess in the atmosphere, it can cause to increase combustion cases. Reason being, it has the characteristics of raising the rates of burning. Hence, it enhances burning of materials which do not readily burn on open air.

When it comes to dealing with liquid oxygen condensation, there shall be a great need to know that liquid nitrogen and helium can assist much. They are cold enough to enhance condensation of oxygen from the air. This has a high potential for increasing the chances of combustion. That is why it is recommended that vessels with these components should be kept away from combustible materials.

Another issue to consider is an effect of the liquefied substances on your health. When one encounters with cold surfaces, there is the tendency of your skin having cold-burns. Also, when you stay in a place which is extremely cold, there is the possibility of suffering from asthma. The same might happen when one is handling the liquefied gaseous materials. So, one should be in safe clothing which will protect them from such effects.

The gas pressure in the vessels needs to be regulated. There is considerable importance for one to make sure that they are filled with the right amounts. In the same case, there must be regulators which detect the required amounts. So, in case of excess, the individuals responsible for that work can release the excess quantities.

Lastly, there is a great need to take note of the above risks to be at the safest end at all times when handling the cryogenic systems. This shall be important for you as well as those people around you since you will be ensuring that they are risk-free. Therefore, it is essential to enhance usage and adherent of all possible preventive measures.
