Game Design & 3 Potential Roles To Take Up

By Katie Arden

Once game design students complete college, it goes without saying that they will want to take up a certain role of employment. This may vary, though, depending on where their interests lie outside of game design. Believe it or not, there are various roles that can be taken up, some of them undoubtedly more common than others. If you'd like to know more about employment, as far as game design is concerned, focus on these 3 points for the future.

One of the first roles that should be considered, in game design, is that of an artist. This individual will be responsible for the concept art tied to the game in design, allowing the entire team to create visuals based on the art in question. An artist may also oversee how their creations come to life, in the game, and offer guidance along the way. If you are someone who is more artistic, as opposed to anything else, this role may very well be the one for you.

For those who enjoy weaving effective narratives, story writers will be required for game design as well. Even though a game may be enjoyable to play, it may not matter much if there isn't a goal that has to be reached. It does not matter how simple or intricate the plot is; there has to be something that will push players along and help them enjoy the experience that much more. Suffice it to say, this is where the services of a story writer will prove to be most useful.

When it comes to the more technological side of things, you may be focused on becoming a game designer. This role of employment encompasses how the game controls, how it feels in general, and just about everything that involves some kind of input. If you are familiar with video games, to even the slightest degree, you probably already know what these aspects should entail. If they are set in place, there's no doubt that the quality of your game will increase.

As you can see, there are quite a few roles that game design students can get involved in. Once success is had, there is no doubt that opportunities will expand. Keep in mind that said opportunities will only come to the forefront if the right effort is set in place, which shouldn't have to be said. If you are driven, as a game design student and future graduate, you can be certain that success will not be too far off.
