As society has always operated, cultures are considered very fundamental especially in dictating the way of life for most people; nonetheless, some have to be done with as they have been outdated over the years. Female genital mutilation is an example of the cultural practices that seemed normal in the past as it was a rite of passage among girl transitioning to women, but things have changed now thus the need for womens health initiatives to prevent FGM.

This practice may have been popular in the past but in this new era, its significance is obscene as scientist have proven that there are lots of health complications that comes with having this procedure. In addition, civilization has also eliminated the need for women to prove their feminity as society expects nothing from them in this regard.

The worst thing about this practice is the fact that traditions made it compulsory for all girls and therefore every girl child is forced to go through with the cut whether they are willing or not. This is the highest level of abuse and given that parent supports this practice and do not mind taking their girls through the cut, something has to be done to stop this.

Initially, the tradition was seen as a rite of passage that saw girls transition to womanhood and for that, it was seen necessary to somehow restrain them from sexual desires by cutting off their clitoris which is a means of reducing their sexual pleasure and a way seen to be the solution for controlling infidelity. Given that the clitoris is the most sensitive spot in a womans body, incising it was seen as the way to go in maintain moral order.

Considering the risks involved in this procedure, it is evident that it should only be done by a professional so as to avoid risking the health of these victims. Nonetheless, this is not what happen to most girls as they usually are taken to unqualified traditional doctors who know little about medicine and consequently many girls ends up incurring lifetime damages.

Among the damages incurred are; barrenness, contraction of infections, severe pains that makes it hard to bear children and at times even death due to excessive bleeding after the procedure. Apart from these risks, these girls are also denied the right to fully enjoy sexual pleasure as it should be which in turn affects their social lives.

In terms of gender comparison, the male gender tends to benefits from this practice; however, the same cannot be said for females as this risks their lives and therefore it infringes on their rights. As a means to stop this madness, heavy punishments should be placed on parents who allow their girls to undergo the cut, and more so the people who are responsible in performing these procedures.

It is the high time that people come together and fight this inhuman act that has been passed from one generation to another as it is only through community policing that some of these problems can be eliminated. This is a new era and people do not need to be controlled by permanently eliminating their body part just to maintain a sense of moral order in society.
